Her mother writes a poem of universality by the celebrated Persian poet Rūmī on her brother's face juxtaposed by the visual and vocal monotony that distorts connectivity, being eye to eye, face to face. The Iran and Pakistan Border marks a pivotal moment between execution and freedom where the artist's family fled persecution during the 1979 Iranian Revolution. “face to face” is a moving portrait of stillness and archival chaos, navigating intergenerational identity. Regarded as one of Western Australia’s most prestigious awards for contemporary art, this is an incredible achievement for an early career artist. In that year Eshraghian-Haakansson also co-founded and is a Lead Artist of the Second Generation Collective, which brings together, through creative pursuits, the generation of children born of parents displaced by the 1979 Iranian Revolution. In 2020 she was the overall winner of the Joondalup Invitation Art Prize. In 2018 she was awarded the Dr Harold Schenberg Art Fellowship as part of Hatched at PICA, and in 2019 she was a finalist in the John Stringer Prize.

UWA postgrad student Elham Eshraghian-Haakansson (currently completing a master's by research) will be showing a three-channel video The End is Glorious, If We Only Persevere accompanied with a new series of block mounted photographs in early 2021 at one of the state’s top contemporary art spaces, Moore Contemporary.Įllie’s work to date has been selected for numerous national showings and has been recognised with early career awards. The Whadjuk Noongar remain the spiritual and cultural custodians of their land, and continue to practise their values, languages, beliefs and knowledge.
